Bike Tours for Sarcoma Research
The action for raising public awareness of oncological diseases, particularly sarcoma, took place in Ukraine during 30th of June – 4th of July. Sarcomas are often misdiagnosed and when they are diagnosed, they are often large and difficult to cure.

Action Background

A famous specialist in computer science, an author of many monographs, Prof. Dr. Bruce Shriver from the USA is organizing a number of international actions named “Bike Tours for Sarcoma Research”. These actions are caused by the disaster he faced with. His daughter was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma (PNET). Over the last 10 years, she has been an avid cyclist, so Dr. Shriver supports her in her wish to undertake a few bike tours while she still can and conducts actions on informing people about Sarcoma in the form of Bike Tours.

Such a Bike Tour was organized by Dr. Bruce Shriver in the United States, Louisiana, on April 10-13, 2003. The next action took place in Denmark, June 30-July 5, 2003.

Similar bike tours for this action support have been taking places in many other countries of the world, particularly in Ukraine.

Action Course in Ukraine

There were created two teams in Kyiv and in Zhitomir. In Kyiv the action was organized by Prof. Dr. Mykola Stepanovich Nikitchenko and Ass. Prof. MSc. Taras Volodymyrovich Panchenko from National Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv, and in Zhitomir – by Ass. Prof. MSc. Vadim Yurijovich Vinnik. Viktor Petrovich Fedyushin, Director of Cycle Track, and Businessman Volodymir Ivanovich Panchenko supported this action by their active collaboration.

Action had started at the “Avangard” Cycle Track in Kyiv (located on Bohdana Khmelnitskogo Street) through bike rides of professional sportsmen. Artem Pastuhov, prize-winner of Ukrainian junior cycle race, was among them. Besides, the Cycle Track is a historical and culture memorial of Ukraine. This year Cycle Track is 90 years of age.

Then action continued on the Kyiv streets. Team Sarcoma members disseminated information about diagnosis and curing of oncological diseases through leaflets and answered to citizenry questions.

Mainly the members of Team Sarcoma/Ukraine were staff and students of National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv, National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and Kyiv-Mohilyanska Academy.

Many Team members took part in action together with their families and friends, which corresponds to the character of action in other countries.

Dr. Grygoriy Ivanovich Klymnyuk, the Head of the Pediatric Oncology Service of Ukraine, the Chief of the Department of the Institute of Oncology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, took part in the action. He gave the information about state and cure problems of oncological diseases in Ukraine.

Marina Igorivna Korolyova and Gallina Viktorivna Gritsay, representatives of the Fund “Woman Health and Family Planning”, also participated in action.

Famous journalists Volodymyr Vasylyovich Mayevsky and Yury Andriyovich Radchenko participated in the action too.

Volodymir Ivanovich Panchenko and Ivan Volodymyrovich Panchenko assisted to organize the action.
